Forts of Karnataka

Begur

Taluk - Bangalore South, District - Bangalore Urban
Begur

In the backyards of bustling Hosur road lies a very old mud fort of Begur. It is said to be around 1000 years old. It lies near the ancient Nageshwara temple of Begur which has the oldest inscription mentioning Bangalore. The fort is circular in shape and surprisingly the mud wall still remains intact. The fort has one entrance which has a gateway made of stone pillars. The pillars have some sculptures made on it. There is a functioning temple inside the fort. The construction and the size of the fort is very peculiar. It has neither bastions nor does it offer a commanding view of the country side. The fort is built on plains and the size is not even as big as a cricket field.
